Nalini telegrams Madras HC, seeking to take on Swamy plea in person
Life convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, Nalini, has sent a telegram to the Registrar General of Madras High court, seeking to appear in person and take on Janata Party President Subramanian Swamy, who opposed her early release.
Nalini, who had been fighting for her early release after her death sentence was commuted to life, sent the telegram to the Registrar General stating that she be allowed to appear in person in a case filed by Dr Swamy.
Dr Swamy had filed a petition in the High Court, opposing the early release of Nalini after the Tamil Nadu government constituted a Prison Advisory Board (PAB) to consider her plea.
The PAB, headed by Vellore District Collector, had met Nalini at the Vellore central prison, where she is lodged and heard her plea.
As a section of the media reported that the PAB had recommended the early release of Nalini,to the state government, Dr Swamy, an acerbic critic of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), moved the High Court, opposing it.
When the case came up for hearing before a Division Bench comprising Justices Elipi Dharmarao and Paul Vasanthakumar, the Registrar General presented Nalini’s telegram.
The Bench took it along with the case bundle and adjourned the case to February 5, when it would be known whether the accused would be allowed to argue her case in person.
