Bank account numbers of HC judges withdrawn from websites: CJI

Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan said the details of bank accounts of High Court Judges have been withdrawn from the public domain as there is a possibility of cyber criminals misusing the information.

‘Keeping in mind the possibility of cyber attack on the bank accounts of the High Court Judges, their account numbers have been withdrawn from the websites,’ he said.

Addressing a Cyber Law Enforcement Programme and National Consultation meeting, Justice Balakrishnan said cyber criminals not only disturb personal lives of people but also harm their prestige.

He said the government could ban all those websites which contains pornographic pictures and spread hatred.

He, however, said it would be improper to ban other websites.

Justice Balakrishnan said it was very difficult to keep a check on the activities of the cyber criminals as a website can be created from any part of the world and anything could be uploaded on it.

‘The negative aspect of the cyber revolution is that a large number of people were being affected by cyber crimes and it was the responsibility of everybody to get rid of this menace,’ Justice Balakrishnan added.

Cyber Regulation Appellate Tribunal Court has also been set up to deal with the cyber crimes but positive results could be achieved only when we have support of judicial and technology experts, he said.

Mr Balakrishnan said many law universities have included cyber laws in their special courses, which is very encouraging.

‘Our immediate priority should be to ensure that investigators, prosecutors and judges are well aware of the issues related to information and technology,’ he said.

Speaking on the occasion Union Law Minister Veerappa Moily said there were many problems in implementation of the cyber laws.

He said the US, South Korea and many other European countries have already set up agencies to deal with the cyber crimes but in our country we have separate cyber police cells on state level.

He also admitted that India des not have the required number of professionals to deal with the problem.

Many High Court judges, DGPs and other cyber law experts were present on the occasion.
