Law Minister ‘No specific proposal to effect change in judges’ appointment system’

30.07.2010 (UNI) The government acknowledged demands to change the procedure for appointing higher judiciary but said it has ‘at present’ no specific proposal to effect change.

The current procedure for appointing Supreme Court and High Court judges is based on a Supreme Court judgement, Law and Justice Minister M Veerappa Moily said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.

He was answering Indian National Congress Members from Andhra Pradesh Rajaiah Siricilla and Porika Naik Balram whether the appointment system is effective or needed revamping.

‘The procedure... has been debated in various fora and there have been demands to change the same,’ Dr Moily said. ‘However, there is, at present, no specific proposal to bring about any change in the present system of appointment of judges in the Supreme Court and the High Courts.’ UNI
